Update
Mileage Equalization Charges
CN and CPR each have a Tariff 6544-D governing mileage equalization and distance allowance on their respective lines. Changes to these tariffs include:
CN Rail
- Empty-to-Empty Movements: Empty rail car moves that were not immediately preceded by a revenue linehaul movement via CN will require a Bill of Lading. The movement will be charged under the applicable commercial tariff (i.e. CN 890000). The above empty car movements are not subject to mileage equalization. All asset use, switching and documentation fees listed under CN 9000 may apply.
- Effective January 1, 2009, the mileage equalization fee for all private rail cars is $1.10 Canadian funds per empty mile and the excess, empty allowance percentage is 4%.
Canadian Pacific Railway
CPR excludes empty car movements from equalization when they are not immediately preceded or followed by a revenue move. For applicable moves, CPR’s 2009 mileage equalization rate per empty mile is $1.05 Canadian funds and the excess, empty allowance is 5%.
